Our Story
After adopting a charter in 1929 in Boston, MA, the band of ministers under the leadership of Bishop Johnson traveled through the eastern and southern tier of the US and established churches in Staten Island, NY, Durham, NC, and Columbus OH. On hearing of the great work of this spirit-filled leader was doing, a young women by the name of Queen Douglas called for a revival to come to her city. Out of that event in the year 1942 a local church was born, bearing the name of Mt. Calvary Holy Church of America, Inc., Buffalo, NY. Bishop Johnson became the first pastor and Rev. Ruth Dickerson was the first assistant pastor. The original address of this assemble was at 564 William Street. With God’s direction it was moved to a large synagogue located at 177 History Street.
It continued there until a destructive fire destroyed the large edifice and Mt. Calvary Holy Church, Buffalo, NY returned to 564 William Street and remained there for 17 years until it relocated to its present address at 240 Hutchinson & Midway Ave, Buffalo, NY.
Our present day leader and Pastor, Rev. Larry C. Thompson who joined the Mt. Calvary Holy Church, Buffalo, NY in 1979 became an active member of the NYS Missionary Dept. serving on the ministerial staff at the local Diocese from 1981-1988. Pastor Thompson holds an Associate Degree in Bible Studies and a Baccalaureate Degree in Christian Ministry. His dedicated work in ministry led to his elevation to the Pastorate by our MCHC prelate Bishop Harold Ivory Williams in 1988. He was also appointed overseer of the NYS Diocese in the year 2005 by Bishop Williams and NYS Jurisdictional bishop, Bishop Frank H. Mixon.
Through divine revelation, our International Presiding Prelate, Archbishop Alfred A. Owens, Jr. D. Min., saw fit to appoint Overseer Thompson for elevation to the Episcopal office of Bishop during the Mt Calvary Holy Church of America, International Winter Empowerment Conference in January of 2008. Joining our NYS Jurisdictional Bishop Larry C. Thompson is NYS First Lady and Co-Pastor Rev. Brenda L.
